Stefan Knapp was born in Poland and came over to the UK in 1942 during World War 2, becoming a RAF Spitfire pilot.
He studied at the Royal Academy Schools and the Slade.
He held many hugely successful one-man exhibitions at the Hanover Gallery and became a well known international artist in the 1950s and 1960s, particularly in the US.
He produced quite a few sculptures but was best known for his pioneering enamel on steel panel abstract paintings.
A remarkable artist who seems to have drifted out of fashion.
